A representative for chef Eli Kulp says he suffered a severe spinal cord injury during the May 12 Amtrak train derailment.
The injuries to Kulp, 37, are described as significant and will require many months of rehabilitation, but he has already shown early signs of recovery, his rep, Clare Pelino, said, adding that plans are now being made for his aggressive rehabilitation.
"Eli and his family will need all of our support during this difficult time," a statement said.
"We are all standing behind Eli as he recuperates. Eli, his family and I thank all our friends, family and staff for their concern, love and support. The restaurants are all busy with people wanting to let Eli know that they are thinking of him and that warms our hearts," said his business partner Ellen Yin, who along with Kulp, owns Fork and High Street on Market and operates a.kitchen + bar at AKA Rittenhouse Square, all in Philadelphia.
"We have a lot happening and most of those things were in motion when Eli was in the accident. This summer, we will start a Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings at High Street on Market; we're adding a new MIWE oven built in Germany to update and improve our bread production; we're beautifying our outdoor dining space at Fork and High Street and offering fun lunch specials, happy hours and Wine Cru Thursdays at a.kitchen," adds Yin.
Kulp assembled a sterling crew: John Patterson, chef de cuisine at Fork; Jon Nodler, chef de cuisine of a.kitchen; Alex Bois, head baker for High Street on Market; Sam Kincaid, pastry chef for Fork and High Street, all supported by front-of-house teams led by Joey Campanella at Fork and High Street and by Laura Moore at a.kitchen + bar.
Plans proceed for a fall opening of High Street on Hudson in New York City.
The restaurant said there is no change in business. Cards and well wishes can be sent to Fork, 306 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. To support him, the restaurant asked that the public keep in touch, keep him in your prayers, and "keep eating at our restaurants."
A fundraiser also is planned for Fork on Thursday, July 16. That date was chosen because Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter declared it "Eli Kulp Day" after he was named one of Food and Wine's Best New Chefs 2014.
