This week's episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia featured, as usual, the gang getting into some inexplicably stupid hijinks, usually brought about by one or more members coming up with a master plan with no other intention other than to achieve personal gratification.
Only this time, there was no development of the master plan. The episode begins with Dennis and Dee hiding in someone's closet while they argue over such pertinent topics as how they got there in the first place and Dee's horrible breath.
The episode's structure was a curious departure from how the Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang usually set up their plots. This time, we're given little to no explanation of why and how they broke into a woman's home to steal a vase, which Mac refers to as "the artifact."
It's not long before Dennis, ever the egomaniac, blames himself for basically being too good a leader. He blames his own "persuasive" speech for getting the gang to follow his lead into doing something that just didn't seem necessary - but really, what does the gang ever do that is necessary?
Frank spends most of the episode going gung-ho about retrieving the vase, for pretty much no reason other than cheap thrills. Per usual, he ends up breaking stuff all over the house, which seems like something Danny DeVito loves to have his character do.
Overall, the episode gave us a fresh take on one of the gang's trademark complicated schemes. And we got all the necessary character tropes - Dennis' vanity, Dee's frustrated outbursts, Charlie's idiotic yet sophomoric ideas, Mac's severe ADD, and Frank causing damage. And there's enough freshness to keep Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans entertained.
